Why do the ingredients in our personal care items matter? How harmful are the products that I use everyday? How do I start the low tox journey?
Meet Amy Enos

Amy has been a pharmacist for over 15+ years, She has a Doctor of Pharmacy degree with board certification in Geriatrics (not so sexy). She became a real nontoxic enthusiast and ingredient detective after her mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer out of the blue. Since 2018, she’s been going down this low tox path and investigating how our personal care products are made & manufactured in the US.
She’s dedicated to learn more and more about what ingredients we need to avoid for our health and wellness. She’s passionate about sharing this issue with others – it truly is a problem that most people do not even know exists. She hopes to empower people to make better decisions about the products they use and buy for themselves and their family.

Why do the ingredients in our personal care items matter?
Our personal care items are things we use everyday because of habit or comfort. We’ve used the same deodorant or makeup since we can remember and there haven’t been any issues, so why should we change now? Well, our skin is our largest organ and what we put ON our bodies matters just as much as what we put IN our bodies.
There are so many harmful chemicals that we come into contact with everyday. For the average woman, she will come into contact with 160-180 chemicals before she leaves the house in the morning.
How harmful are the products that I use everyday?
The harmful chemicals used in our personal care items are generally known as endocrine disruptors. That means they affect your fertility, thryoid, growth and development, and other complex systems inthe body. We come into contact with and use ingredients every day with known human carcinogens and there really is so oversight or regulations in this space.
These dangerous ingredients can cause major health issues years and years into the future, if they’re not already causing problems with your health.
How do I start the low tox journey.
While that all sounds really doom and gloom, there is hope! Make one small change and don’t purchase anything that has “fragrance” listed as an ingredient. There is no regulation around that and companies don’t have to disclose what they use to make the fragrance. This is the one thing that can make the biggest difference the quickest.
Then, just be mindful. When you run out of your shampoo, look for a better and healthier option. As you take the small steps, you’ll be making big changes with just small actions.
