When was the last time you truly felt happiness? Do you come to terms with your fears? Are you in control?
Meet Don Joseph Goewey
Don Joseph Goewey is the Executive Director of the Center for Spiritual Exchange, the official archive for the works of Anthony De Mello. He spent six years directing a think tank that integrated breakthroughs in neuroscience into a psycho-spiritual model for rewiring the brain to extinguish stress reactions and amplify the higher brain function. This enabled the human being to flourish. The model has been successfully applied in high pressure work environments like Cisco and Wells Fargo helping people elevate their experience of work and of life in profound and measurable ways.
Previously, Don managed the department of psychiatry at Stanford University Medical School. He headed an institute that pioneered a psycho-spiritual approach to overcoming catastrophic life events, which in 2005 was awarded the Excellence in Medicine citation by the American Medical Association.

The perfect storm for stress
Stress looks different on everyone. For instance, loss of a job, relationship problems, or health issues are some of the biggest forms of stress. And the root of stress, always comes back to fear. In fact, only about 4% of the population feels happy. Which means 96% of us are stressed or have some sort of depression. Society programs you into thinking that happiness is earned and not within. If you have the house, the family, the health you have happiness right? Wrong. Happiness comes from within. You don’t have to have it all to be happy.
Fear is an illusion
It’s like a domino effect. Stress leads to fear which leads to depression. Then consequently, depression leads to unhappiness. And changing it doesn’t work, you have to face it. Fear only exists within and only you control that. You should be diligently aware of your emotions so that you can embrace that fear in order to calm yourself. After that, comes relief.
4 Steps to stress relief
- Feel those negative emotions and understand they are short lived. What you are not aware of you cannot control. Likewise, what you are aware of you can control.
- Acknowledge that those negative feelings are only within you and your brain will calm those fears.
- Do not identify with the negative feelings. In other words, instead of saying “I am depressed” try saying “right now I feel depressed”.
- When it passes, be still. Peace will come. Enjoy it.
“It will pass”
Don’t lose track of how strong you are. Come to terms with the challenges. Remember, the mind and body connection is a powerful thing.
