What is trauma? What does trauma look like in your life? How can you utilize the power of “the eye of the storm”?
In this podcast, I speak with Jolyn Harris about trauma and what happens after catastrophe strikes.
Meet Jolyn Armstrong
When her son was arrested, Jolyn Armstrong discovered that even an idyllic life can be turned upside down in an instant by a crisis.
That’s why she launched Grapevine Mindware, a coaching program designed to help women in crisis overcome the trauma, end the pain, find peace, and get their lives back.
Jolyn’s mission is to empower women impacted by trauma to live their best lives now regardless of outside circumstances.

The trauma defined
It’s an outside event or circumstance that you have no control over, you didn’t cause it, and you can’t stop it … that overwhelms your ability to deal with it. When [these] things are present, you’ve got some trauma. (Jolyn Armstrong)
Trauma can manifest from a variety of different situations and can be time-dependent, such as complex PTSD, which is trauma that has been endured over an extended period of time. Physical trauma can also exist from a traumatic event such as a terrible car accident.
Identifying trauma
- Losing blocks of time: dissociation.
- You are repeating the same conversation with different people.
- Going overboard on an activity to try to bring yourself peace. This can look like over-exercising or binge-watching a series.
- If your job or business is suffering.
- Helplessness and feeling stuck that you are not able to change the situation.
This can also manifest in opposing techniques, such as:
- Avoiding dealing with the trauma through over-working.
- Getting really into your work or your hobbies to divert time away.
The eye of the storm
When you are traumatized … it feels like you are in a freaking hurricane. Things are blowing all around you, you have no control, you don’t know what’s coming at you next … part of that, when your mind is spinning, that’s what that is, that storm is just being generated in your mind. (Jolyn Armstrong)
The eye of the storm, however, beyond the storm itself, is a calm space. The storm may still be raging but there is a calm space that you can find to help you ground yourself and settle your feet. You can use this eye of the storm as an opportunity to work from this calm perspective to make a plan for when the next part of the storm comes past.
Until you can find the eye of the storm, everything else is very difficult to deal with, so that’s our first step. Let’s calm the mind, let’s get your feet back on the ground and let’s get you into that eye of the storm for a minute. (Jolyn Armstrong)
